In an in-depth interview titled, “Bishop Minerva Carcaño Has a Nearly Impossible Job,” Dr. Mary Hunt explores Bishop Carcaño’s leadership on immigration issues and her longing for justice in the UMC on inclusion of people regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. Dr. Hunt quotes Bishop Carcaño, who said, “I pray that one day our exclusion of persons of homosexual orientation will end in the United Methodist Church.”
Dr. Hunt understands the challenge of being a Hispanic woman bishop in the United Methodist Church, comparing Bishop Carcaño to “the legendary Ginger Rogers, [who] must do everything her male counterparts do, but in high heels and backwards.”
